One of the biggest advantages of staying at Oker Farm is that you can access some of the Peak District’s best-loved walking routes directly from the doorstep. No driving, no parking worries — just step outside and walk straight into beautiful countryside.
Below are some of our guests’ favourite local walks, including exact directions to help you set off with confidence.
1. Derwent Heritage Way (Matlock & Matlock Bath section)
The Derwent Heritage Way is a famous 55-mile trail following the River Derwent, and several sections are easily accessible from Oker Farm. Directions from Oker Farm - Leave Oker Farm and turn right onto the country lane, carry on for 5 minutes until you reach a left turn for a signed public footpath. Take the footpath heading towards the Derwent Valley, passing through fields and farmland, this path links directly into riverside routes that form part of the Derwent Heritage Way, from here you can either turn left to walk towards Matlock or turn right to head towards Matlock Bath Both options offer gentle, scenic walking with plenty of opportunities to create circular routes back to the farmhouse.
2. Riverside Walk to Matlock Bath
This is a popular, mostly flat walk and ideal for a relaxed outing or winter stroll.
Directions - Follow the directions above to reach the Derwent Heritage Way, turn right and follow the clearly marked riverside path alongside the River Derwent, continue along the river until you reach Matlock Bath, known for its historic buildings, riverside views and cafés. You can return the same way or loop back via quiet lanes and footpaths for a longer circular walk.
3. Walk into Matlock via the Derwent Valley
Perfect if you want a scenic walk into town rather than driving. From Oker Farm, head downhill and join the connecting footpath to the Derwent Heritage Way. Turn left, following signs for Matlock. Continue along riverside paths and quiet tracks until you arrive in Matlock town centre. This route is especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon, with calm water, wildlife and valley views.
4. Elevated Walk - Oker Tree to High Tor approx 2.1 miles
For guests looking for a little more elevation and panoramic views, this walk is well worth the effort. From Oker Farm, take a left at the dfront door into the fields and to the first gate, then walk through the gate and keep walking uphill. Follow signed footpaths leading towards woodland and higher ground above Matlock. You will be able to see the famous Oker Tree from here! Follow the path to the Oker Hill trig point, once down the hillside continue onto Flint Lane before taking the footpath to Wenslees. Continue towards High Tor, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views across the Derwent Valley. These paths can be combined with Derwent Heritage Way sections to form longer circular routes back to the farm.

All of these routes are popular with dog owners, and many guests love being able to head out straight from the farmhouse without needing the car. After a long walk, return to Oker Farm to dry muddy paws, light the log fire, or relax in the hot tub.
